ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University Softball was stopped in both ends of an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon as they fell to Marymount University by scores of 12-3 and 8-3.
Neumann started off strong in game one with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI double by
Ellie Zarnawski. Marymount responded with two two-run doubles in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 lead. In the second, the Saints had an RBI double and added a two-run home run in the third to extend to 7-1.
In the top of the fourth,
Rylie Norris drove in a run on a ground out but again the Saints had an answer on three doubles that resulted in five runs. The fifth inning saw the Knights scored on an RBI double by
Gracie Jairdullo but they couldn't get any closer.
In the second game, it was Marymount who got the scoring started early as they plated a run in the first thanks to an error. They pulled away in the second with a steal of home, a bases-loaded walk, a two-run single, and an RBI single for a 6-0 lead. The Knights attempted to claw back into the game in the third when
Emily Ammon hit a single up the middle to score
Tori Spinella. Zarnawski and
Rebecca DiLeo each knocked in run on RBI groundouts to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Saints rounded out the day with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Ammon finished the day with an RBI and three runs scored on 3 for 7 hitting with a double and a steal.
Dakota Marshall was 3 for 6 with a run scored and Norris was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
Neumann (9-13, 2-2 Atlantic East) will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Gwynedd Mercy University in an Atlantic East doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
