Baseball Defeats Albright for Fourth in a Row

READING, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team upended Albright College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game by a final score of 9-8.

JerVal Shuler led the way, hitting 2 for 4 with a home run, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Anthony Rakotz had a big day at the plate by going 4 for 5 with a double, two stolen bases, an RBI, and a run scored. Nick Ciesielka was also 2 for 4 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Jake Hommer had a good start on the mount, earning a no-decision. In four innings, he allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one. Kyle Dailey earned the win in 1.2 innings of work, giving up just one hit.

With one out in the first, Neumann got rolling with a Rakotz double and a Ciesielka single that moved Rakotz to third. After Ciesielka advanced to second on a wild pitch, Andrew Brown singled to right to plate Rakotz. Shuler then drove in Ciesielka with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Albright got back within one with an RBI single to center. Neumann came right back in the top of second as Jackson Armiger doubled and Yoan Feliz walked. Three batters later, Rakotz hit a single up the middle to regain the two-run lead.

The Lions got back within one in the third on an RBI grounder and in the fifth, tied the game with an RBI double. In the seventh, Donovan Brooks led off with a single and moved to second on an error. When Rakotz flew out to right, Brooks moved to third and scored on a Ciesielka single. Ciesielka then moved to second on a wild pitch and Andrew Brown was hit by a pitch, sending Shuler to the plate. He slammed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-center for his third long ball of the season, giving the Knights a 7-3 lead.

They added another run in the eighth on an error, but Albright roared back in the bottom of the inning. A two-run double, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI fielder's choice, and a base-loaded hit by pitch tied the game at eight.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Shuler singled to left and advanced to third when Tyler Kilmer singled. Armiger followed and laid down a bunt down the first base line. By the time he was tagged, Shuler had already scored the winning run, despite Albright getting the tying run to third in the bottom of the inning.

Neumann (10-5-1, 4-2 Atlantic East) will return to action on Thursday when they visit Marymount University in a conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
