HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University women's basketball team clinched the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic East Conference postseason with a 66-51 win over Centenary University on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.
Elaina Guerzon led the Knights with 17 points and three steals.
Bri Gautier notched 14 points and nine rebounds.
Jess Aponik netted 13 points.
Jenna Aponik and
Lindsay Holden each added nine points.
The teams battled back and forth in the first quarter. Tied at nine, a three-pointer by Guerzon in the final minute put Neumann up 12-9 after the first.
With the teams tied at 13 early in the second, the Knights went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 advantage. A layup by
Emily DuPont in the final minute gave Neumann a 31-20 lead at halftime.
The Knights continued to build on their lead throughout the third quarter. A jumper by Gautier gave Neumann a 48-33 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Cyclones chipped their way into the deficit in the fourth quarter and pulled to within eight, 56-48, with 2:45 left in regulation. The Knights went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch and added two layups in the final 30 seconds to build back their lead and bring home the 66-51 win.
Neumann (9-16, 7-7 Atlantic East) will host No. 5 seeded Centenary on Monday evening in Atlantic East first-round match up. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM to start the doubleheader.
